  Into each square of a 5x5 grid, place the digits from 0 to 8 once each.  In the unoccupied squares place mines as needed so that, as in classic minesweeper, each digit represents the number of mines neighboring that square.  Try to use the minimum number of mines necessary to achieve this.

Solutions were received from Richard Mathar, Joseph DeVincentis, Pedro Romero, Jeremy Galvagni, Andrzej Solecki, Sudipta Das, and Jackson. Richard Mathar wrote a program to find all solutions. After removing rotations and reflections, they are listed here.
  With the sorting/elimination as before (0 in the upper left corner..) we get
42 boards with 15 mines and 2 boards with 16 mines, listed below. This is more
than derived from elimination of my first e-mail, because this  contained some,
but not all swapped/rotated solutions.
  The integer number quoted after the "xx mines:" is obtained from a binary representation
of the mine locations (M=1, empty_or_number=0), where the upper left corner is the
least-significant digit and the lower right corner the most-significant digit.
  If the final number in such a line "xx mines: YYYYY" is "1", the same mine configuration
allows another placement of the numbers (which is not necessarily listed because it is
equivalent up to a rotation/mirror operation to another one).
